Bebedouros de Lisboa

Bebedouros de Lisboa is a mapping project designed to make the 400+ drinking fountains (bebedouros) of Lisbon as accessible as possible for the urban explorer. Born out of my love for urban hiking, my passion for free drinking water, and my interest in the pedestrianization of cities, this project aims to use walking, the principles of chance, and Guy Debord's articulation of the dérive to establish the city as the pedestrian's playground. My hope is to bring together the city's inhabitants to create a participatory experience that is both fun and disruptive, radical and whismical, undermining the capitalist vision of cities as individualized spaces void of real human connection. Although often designed for the function of cars, bureaucratic administration, and consumerism, cities can also be places of slowness and rest, where third spaces such as free water fountains (often stationed around benches, gardens, and parks) remind us of our shared humanity.
